چکیده

We review in this article the influence of surface waves on the thermally excited electromagnetic field. We study in particular the field emitted at subwavelength distances of material surfaces. After reviewing the main properties of surface waves, we introduce the fluctuation–dissipation theorem that allows to model the fluctuating electromagnetic fields. We then analyse the contribution of these waves in a variety of phenomena. They give a leading contribution to the density of electromagnetic states, they produce both temporal coherence and spatial coherence in the near field of planar thermal sources. They can be used to modify radiative properties of surfaces and to design partially spatially coherent sources. Finally, we discuss the role of surface waves in the radiative heat transfer and the theory of dispersion forces at the subwavelength scale. # 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. Blackbody spectrum revisited in the near field.

We report local spectra of the near-field thermal emission recorded by a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, using a tungsten tip as a local scatterer coupling the near-field thermal emission to the far field. Spectra recorded on silicon carbide and silicon dioxide exhibit temporal coherence due to thermally excited surface waves. Finally, we evaluate the ability of this spectroscopy to pr...

Radiative heat transfer: many-body effects

Heat transfer by electromagnetic radiation is one of the common methods of energy transfer between objects. Using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, we have studied the effect of particle arrangement in the transmission of radiative heat in many-body systems. In order to show the effect of the structure morphology on the collective properties, the radiative heat transfer is studied and the re...

Thermal correction to the Casimir force, radiative heat transfer, and an experiment

The low-temperature asymptotic expressions for the Casimir interaction between two real metals described by Leontovich surface impedance are obtained in the framework of thermal quantum field theory. It is shown that the Casimir entropy computed using the impedance of infrared optics vanishes in the limit of zero temperature. By contrast, the Casimir entropy computed using the impedance of the ...

Active Radiative Thermal Switching with Graphene Plasmon Resonators.

We theoretically demonstrate a near-field radiative thermal switch based on thermally excited surface plasmons in graphene resonators. The high tunability of graphene enables substantial modulation of near-field radiative heat transfer, which, when combined with the use of resonant structures, overcomes the intrinsically broadband nature of thermal radiation. In canonical geometries, we use non...

Exploring surface interactions with atom chips

We review the current status of the field of atom-surface interactions, with an emphasis on the regimes specific to atom chips. Recent developments in theory and experiment are highlighted. In particular, atom-surface interactions define physical limits for miniaturization and coherent operation. This implies constraints for applications in quantum information processing or matter wave interfer...
